Cathedral Square Activation

Cathedral Square Activation

Cathedral Square is a small oasis on Dunsmuir Street in the east edge of downtown Vancouver, between Richards and Homer streets.

The Vancouver Park Board is partnering with the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association (DVBIA) and Hives for Humanity to bring honeybees, a pollinator garden, and ongoing pollinator and garden workshops to the Square.

We'll add two beehives enclosed by fencing, and plants that benefit bees and other pollinators in the existing garden in the north part of the Square (six concrete pillars and a blue lattice canopy). By summer 2017, you'll be able to sample Cathedral Square honey!

This project supports the Park Board Biodiversity Strategy, Rewilding Action Plan, and Greenest City Action Plan by providing:

  • Opportunities for environmental education and stewardship
  • Habitat for pollinator plants and animals in the urban landscape

Summer 2016

The Vancouver Park Board partnered with the Downtown Vancouver BIA to host their PERCH program which adds temporary bistro tables and chairs to publicly accessible plazas in the downtown. Look for the brightly coloured bistro sets to return in summer 2017!

For a second season, a piano, painted by a local artist, was placed in Cathedral Square as part of Keys to the Streets.
