Places for People Downtown

Through Places for People Downtown, we will create a strategy to shape and deliver vibrant public spaces downtown

What’s your vision for public space in downtown Vancouver?

Vancouver’s public spaces – our plazas, squares, streets, laneways, pathways, and waterfront – are where public life happens.

We're looking for your feedback on how to plan and deliver exceptional, vibrant, and memorable public spaces, places, and experiences in the downtown peninsula.

Our downtown public places and spaces are where we connect with the city and where we connect with each other – it's where community is created.

This is the first phase of a public space strategy for the broader city core area.

Future phases will include the Downtown Eastside neighbourhoods, including Gastown and Chinatown, False Creek Flats, and the communities south of False Creek.

Our new strategy will include places and spaces in:

  • The Central Business District
  • Coal Harbour
  • West End
  • Downtown South
  • Yaletown
  • False Creek North
  • Northeast False Creek

What's happening

Volunteer for the public space and public life study

Have you ever wondered why you enjoy walking down certain streets more than others? Or why some areas of cities are brimming with people while others feel abandoned? Help us find out!

Gehl is conducting a Public Life Survey in partnership with the City of Vancouver to collect 'people data' and better understand how people get around and spend time in the city.

The survey will inform a Downtown Public Space Strategy and potential test projects to bring the strategy from vision to action.

This is a great way to learn about Gehl's approach to urban planning and design and play an active role in future changes to the public realm in Vancouver.

When?

Shifts will take place on Thursday, September 14 and Saturday, September 16. There is a required evening training (with snacks!) on Wednesday evening, September 13 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Roundhouse Community Centre, 181 Roundhouse Mews.

Most shifts will be four hours and take place between 8:00am and 8:00pm. Some shifts involve less of a time commitment.

You are welcome to participate in more than one shift.

Where?

Multiple locations across downtown Vancouver.

Be prepared to be outside and on your feet for the duration of your shift.
